The Westleigh School celebrates outstanding GCSE results and a record year of improvement!

Students’ determination, ambition and hard work are celebrated as the school records its strongest improvement across Wigan and the Shaw Education Trust.

Students, families and staff at The Westleigh School are celebrating an exceptional set of GCSE results today, marking a proud moment for the whole school community and a record year of improvement.

The results recognise The Westleigh School as the most improved school in Wigan and across the Shaw Education Trust. They reflect the determination and resilience of this year’s students, who have embraced every opportunity, supported one another and worked tirelessly towards their goals.

English outcomes were a particular highlight, with 74% of students achieving grades 9 to 4 - above the national average. For the first time, English outcomes also exceeded those achieved in both Science and Mathematics, marking a significant milestone in the school’s continuing improvement journey.

Achievement at the very highest level was equally impressive, with students securing 70 Grade 9s and seven Distinction Stars across the curriculum. Biology was a particular highlight, with an exceptional 32% of students achieving Grade 9, while Drama celebrated an outstanding 100% pass rate.

Among many individual success stories was Vivien, who achieved the extraordinary distinction of a Grade 9 in every subject. Her achievement sits alongside countless personal triumphs across the year group - each one representing commitment, perseverance and progress.

These outcomes follow sustained investment in high-quality teaching and learning. The school’s digital strategy has equipped every student with an iPad, enabling technology to be used purposefully to enrich classroom learning, provide timely feedback and strengthen independent study. Alongside expert teaching, this has helped students develop the confidence, organisation and independence they need for their next steps.

The celebrations come at the end of another year of significant improvement in attendance. Attendance rose for the second consecutive year and finished above the national average, meaning more students were in school, engaged in learning and able to benefit from the opportunities available to them.

Mr C Bramwell: Executive Headteacher stated,

“Today belongs to our students. We could not be prouder of the young people they have become, or of the courage, ambition and determination they have shown throughout their time at Westleigh. These results open doors, but they also tell a much bigger story: one of students who kept going, believed in themselves and supported one another to succeed.

“There are so many achievements to celebrate - from exceptional top grades and outstanding subject results to the personal breakthroughs that mean the world to individual students and their families. Every result has been earned, and every student should feel immensely proud of what they have accomplished.

“I would also like to thank our dedicated staff, and our parents and carers, for the encouragement, care and belief they have given our students. This has been a true team effort across the Westleigh community. We are delighted to celebrate with our students today and excited to see where their talents and aspirations take them next.”
