Drama Curriculum Intent

At the heart of our Drama curriculum is a belief in the transformative power of theatre. We aim to ignite creativity, imagination, and self-expression, inspiring every student to find their unique voice and the confidence to share it. Through exploring a wide range of theatrical styles, genres, and traditions, students develop not only as performers but as empathetic, reflective individuals with a deeper understanding of the world around them. Drama at ‘The Westleigh School’ goes beyond the stage. It builds essential life skills such as communication, collaboration, and resilience, equipping students to thrive in any path they choose. Above all, our curriculum celebrates the joy of storytelling and the exploration of what it means to be human, empowering students to connect, to create, and to shine.

Implementation

Our Drama curriculum is brought to life through exciting, dynamic, and engaging lessons that immerse students in the creative process. From the very start, students are encouraged to explore, experiment, and take risks in a supportive environment where every idea is valued. The students study a rich variety of theatrical styles and practitioners, from classic to contemporary, and bring these to life through practical workshops, performance projects, and devised work. We provide many opportunities for students to perform to a range of audiences, both within school and beyond, helping them to develop confidence, resilience, and pride in their achievements. Regular extra-curricular opportunities – such as school productions and theatre trips further inspire students and broaden their cultural horizons. Every aspect of our implementation is designed not only to develop performance skills but to nurture creativity, teamwork, and selfbelief, ensuring that every student leaves with both unforgettable experiences and transferable skills that will stay with them for life.

Impact

The impact of our Drama curriculum is seen in the confidence, creativity, and resilience our students carry with them long after they leave the stage. They develop into articulate, empathetic young people who can communicate effectively, think critically, and work collaboratively in any context. Students leave with a lifelong appreciation of theatre and the arts, enriched by experiences that have challenged, inspired, and broadened their understanding of the world. Many go on to pursue Drama and the performing arts further, while all benefit from the transferable skills Drama provides – skills that empower them to thrive in education, employment, and life. Above all, our Drama curriculum shapes students who are not only confident performers but also reflective, compassionate individuals, ready to take their place in society with imagination, courage, and a strong sense of self.
